It’s a common assumption that national anthems are all about the lyrics. They stir our emotions, tell stories of our history, and unite us in a shared voice. But what if there were no words at all? Believe it or not, several countries around the world have national anthems that are purely instrumental.
One such example is Spain’s Marcha Real (Royal March). Adopted in 1770, this majestic piece has no official lyrics, although attempts have been made to add them throughout history. Today, Spaniards stand proudly in silence during the anthem, letting the soaring melody speak for itself.
Another wordless wonder is Wilhelmus from the Netherlands. This tune, dating back to the 16th century, was originally a celebratory song for the Prince of Orange. Over time, it evolved into the Dutch national anthem.
